Nancy Wilson was born 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe, Ohio to Olden Wilson, an iron worker, and Lillian Ryan (a former housemaid). Nancy is the eldest among six children. Nancy was heavily influenced in her early years by the music that her father was a fan of and played when she was at his home. When she was four, Nancy was aware that she would like to become a musician. She discovered her talent for music through singing in choirs at church. After graduating from high school the 17-year old Nancy took a class for a year at Ohio's Central State College now Central State University prior to dropping out and becoming a professional performer. In 1956 she made her debut album along with Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band. They toured together from 1956 through 1958. Nancy released her debut recording on Dot Records during the time she was with the group. Cannonball told her she should relocate into New York and go to The Big Town to continue her singing career. Adderley's Agent heard her in The Blue Morocco Night Club, Boston Road, The Bronx and she then signed her contract. within a month after her arrival in New York City.
